Career History

When I left school in the early eighties I did not really know what direction to take although I knew it had to be creative & artistic I went to art college where I completed a foundation course in art.  At the same time I had a part time job at a local screen printers, they rented some space to a signwriter & I often watched him working with great interest. So one day I decided to call a few local sign companies to ask if they would take me on. BM signs of Chapel Mews Brighton agreed to give me a start. When I first went there I knew I had made the right choice about my new career. Back then it was still the old trade, everything was hand painted there was no other way to produce a one off sign. It was magical walking in to the workshop & watching half a dozen signwriters at their easels, working on pictorial pub signs, gold leaf signs & many other types of hand painted signs. I spent five years learning the fascinating craft of sign writing before leaving & setting up on my own.

Learning to do signwriting has allowed me to produce a wide range of signage using different materials & techniques in Brighton & Sussex & all over the UK.

After several years doing this & watching huge changes in the sign industry due to computerised graphics I decided to take some time out from making signs & moved overseas. When I came back to Brighton I knew I had to carry on with traditional sign writing and so British Inn Signs was established to provide hand crafted signs for discerning clients. The core products are traditional sign written signs & pictorial signs but also, signs for conservation areas, honours boards, vehicles, heraldic signs & shields, gold leaf glass signs, marbling & graining, gilded furniture & picture frames, murals, coach lining, poster writing, signs for shops, contractors boards, a-frames, Victorian glass fascias ,three dimensional gold leaf letters & a comprehensive sign installation service. All over Brighton & Sussex & the whole of the UK.
